Preventing, stopping and reporting child abuse

At the Marina Orth Foundation we are committed to the comprehensive protection of children and adolescents.

Child abuse is defined as any conduct, by act or omission, that harms the physical or emotional health of a person under the age of 18.

It includes any form of injury, punishment, humiliation, physical or psychological abuse, neglect, maltreatment or sexual exploitation.


Alarm signals

Here are some physical and psychological signs that may indicate an abusive situation:

Physical signs:

  • Hemorrhages or lesions in the genitals or anal area.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases or abnormal secretions.
  • Rupture of the hymen or anal sphincter without accidental cause.
  • Unexplained bruises, burns or wounds.
  • Recurrent physical pain or extreme fatigue.
  • Problems with sphincter control (enuresis, encopresis).
  • Appetite disturbances or unusual sexualized behaviors.

Psychological signs:

  • Prolonged sadness, withdrawal or isolation.
  • Drastic changes in mood or behavior.
  • Neglect of personal hygiene.
  • Loss of interest in daily activities.
  • Self-mutilation or suicidal thoughts.
  • Leaving home or sudden school deterioration.


What to do if you suspect a case of child abuse?

If you suspect that a child is a victim of physical, psychological or sexual abuse, it is important to act and report it to the appropriate authorities.
